What’s the most polluting thing you can think of? Cars? Factories? Airline traffic?
Well, guess again. Cars, factories and planes might be big sinners when it comes to CO2 emission, but so are we all. Our use of IT and the Internet actually produces more CO2 than airline traffic! Isn’t that mad? That has got to be a lot of CO2.
We all rely on the Internet and use it every day to stay in touch with each other and get new information – and I for one don’t want to stop.
Being an Internet-based company, Mindjumpers also has a responsibility. We produce a lot of communication on our own website and especially on our blog, and we depend on a lot of visitors on these. But when we’re winning – the climate is loosing.
But there is actually something we can do. By joining ingenco2.dk (In English; No CO2) this website has (along with mindjumpers.com) been made C02 neutral. That means that when you log on to mindjumpers.com and mindjumpers.wordpress.com you can still have a clear conscience, because Mindjumpers bought CO2 quotas.
How does it work?
When a company joins ingenco2.dk, ingenco2.dk buys a quota of CO2 from the EU and gets it annulled by Energistyrelsen (in English; The Energy Board). It’s the EU that decides how much CO2 we are allowed to produce. All big companies in Europe are included in the CO2-quota-system (EUA) and they have to buy quotas of CO2 from the EU to get permission to produce CO2. But if other companies with websites buy the quotas, instead of just doing nothing, there won’t be any left for the big polluting companies and they’ll have to reduce their emission of CO2. So by making our websites CO2 neutral we force big polluting companies to be more green and climate friendly.

I think that is truly a beautifull initiative. Every little helps when it comes to the climate. My company has also joined.
Sounds interesting. I just checked their website. And its all cleared by the ministry of Energy and EU. And what also catched my attention was all the companies who have already joined the initiative.
